What is a FUE Hair Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is an advanced surgical hair transplant performed under local anesthetic. In this procedure, an experienced cosmetic doctor carefully uses micro punches between 0.6–0.8 mm at the back of the scalp to harvest tiny hair grafts. These grafts are then strategically transplanted into bald or thinning areas of the scalp to restore hair growth.

Our mission is to provide the most natural-looking hair transplants in Melbourne so you can face the world with a renewed sense of confidence.

When is my final result?

How FUE works

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) works by harvesting individual hair follicles from your scalp and implanting them in an area where you want to improve hair density. Once these hair follicles, or grafts, are implanted back into the scalp, they’re nourished with a fresh blood supply, and the hair growth process is renewed.

The FUE procedure: step by step

  • Step 1 – Preparation of donor area

Your surgeon will shave the donor area at the back of your head to 1mm long, ready for follicle extraction.

  • Step 2 – Harvesting hair grafts

Donor hair follicles are extracted individually using a micro punch tool that rotates and oscillates with adjustable depth.

  • Step 3 – Follicle preparation

The harvested follicles are sorted into units of 1 to 4 hairs and placed in a holding solution of HypoThermosol® to maintain their viability.

  • Step 4 – Micro incisions and implantation

Your doctor will make a series of tiny incisions into the scalp. These incisions will dictate spacing and angles of growth for your new hairs.

Grafts are then carefully inserted into the incisions by our nurse & tech team.

Why choose The Derm Lab for your FUE hair transplant?

Manual FUE is our area of expertise, performing this treatment 3-4 times per week. Combining speed and accuracy, our doctor-led team are highly knowledgeable and experienced in delivering this method of hair transplant, allowing them to safely extract and insert between 1,000 to 4,000 grafts in one day.

Our process is thorough and transparent, and we pride ourselves on taking a highly personalised and artistic approach to our work and collaborating with our patients to deliver the most natural and authentic result.

Your satisfaction is our priority.

Why FUE? Comparing hair transplant methods

When it comes to restoring hair, we’re spoilt for choice, but manual FUE is the best option for those who want the most natural-looking results. With the precision of an experienced cosmetic doctor, it delivers the most natural-looking and artistic hairline, thinning crown or general density reduction with virtually undetectable scarring compared to robotic or FUT hair transplants. Manual FUE offers a micro punch (sizes vary from 0.75-1mm) compared to the ARTAS iX robot which requires a larger punch so for patients that need anything over 2000 grafts we suggest manual FUE. Available options will be presented to you during your complimentary consultation.

  • FUE vs. FUT: What’s the difference?

The main difference between FUE and FUT is how the hair follicles are extracted from the scalp. With FUE, the doctor uses a micro punch to extract the grafts individually. FUT involves removing a long, thin strip of tissue, from the back of the scalp.

  • Benefits of minimally invasive techniques

The main benefit of FUE compared to FUT is the minimally invasive technique of extracting and transplanting singular hair grafts. This creates far less noticeable scarring (if at all noticeable) compared to the strip removal in FUT which leaves an unsightly and obvious scar that can only be hidden with longer hair, making FUE an increasingly popular treatment option for Men who wish to wear their hair short.

Frequently asked questions

Who is FUE for?

At The Derm Lab, we specialise in FUE hair transplants for men of all ages, from young adults to retirees. Our procedure is ideal for those experiencing thinning hair, male and female pattern baldness, and alopecia.

Will I require medication after treatment?

In some cases, we may recommend medication to support the underlying cause of your hair loss. Patients are often prescribed antibiotics to avoid infection after the procedure, as the process can cause a degree of scarring depending on the individual.

Should I choose a robotic or manual FUE hair transplant?

Both robotic and manual FUE hair transplants offer significant results. Robotic FUE is ideal for fast, precise and efficient treatment for larger areas, while manual FUE allows for detailed, personalised adjustments, delivering the most natural results.
