Skin needling (commonly referred to as microneedling) is a process whereby the skin receives precise, minute punctures from a device called a Dermapen in order to encourage collagen production. The aim of the treatment is to boost the skin’s ability to repair itself, and leave the complexion looking rejuvenated.
Skin needling is a popular option for people with a range of skin conditions from acne to wrinkles. It has been practised for many years already, and in that time has gained a reputation as a safe, effective treatment in Brisbane.
The Dermapen is a fantastic tool that has revolutionised the world of skincare. It is a pen-like device that uses disposable, sterile microneedles that range from 0.25mm to 2.5mm in length. These tiny needles are able to penetrate the skin’s upper layer (epidermis) and lower layer (dermis) in a way that is both targeted and accurate. The pin point bleeding this induces is both controlled and effective at prompting the body’s own wound healing response. This response is effective at improving the look and texture of the skin as it helps produce collagen.
– Patients are given a topical anaesthetic around 45 minutes before microneedling takes place. Once the patient is ready and primed, the Dermapen is swept over the treatment area a number of times, creating thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin
– Once this part of the treatment is over, the skin is gently cleansed and a repair serum is applied to help speed up the healing process
– You will have a mild ‘sunburnt’ appearance for 24-48 hours. Over the first 24 hours, you cannot apply makeup
A Dermapen is one of the most advanced pieces of skin needling technology available thanks to its electrically charged automation combined with an ergonomic oscillating wand. The vibrations emitted by the Dermapen during use are designed to provide a comfortable experience whilst the needles create microscopic, rejuvenating holes in the skin.
One of the most innovative things about the Dermapen is its amazing precision. Indeed, the convertible speed motor and ability to adjust treatment depths mean that a number of different skin issues can be treated in one session. Skin concerns that may improve with the Dermapen include wrinkles, stretch marks and pigmentation. Like other skin and face needling procedures, the best results are achieved with repeat treatments.
The Dermapen’s main purpose is to create tiny, painless channels in the surface of the skin. This then encourages the skin to heal itself naturally, ultimately eliciting a rejuvenating effect. The more treatments a patient undergoes, the better the skin’s ability to heal and regenerate.
During the procedure itself, patients will feel a minor stinging, vibrating sensation. This is nothing to worry about, and only means that the treatment is working.
Unlike other types of skin needling, Dermapen technology is very quick, taking only around 15 minutes. It is also great for treating areas of the face that are difficult to reach such as the under-eye and upper lip. Once the treatment is over, your skin may look slightly red and sore. This will last for up to two days.*Individual results may vary
The Dermapen is the best option for inducing new collagen production, so is perfect for treating wrinkles, fine lines, and dull skin. It is also a great option for those with more complex skin conditions such as acne scars thanks to its ability to replace damaged tissue with fresh collagen. In this way, skin is left looking clearer, smoother and rejuvenated.
The Dermapen may also be used for hyperpigmentation and age spots, particularly for those with darker skin tones. What’s more, the pen-like wand is the perfect size to treat the entire face and neck area, including the brow bone, upper lip and under-eyes.
Rejuvenation: 4-6 treatments, 4 weeks apart
Acne scarring: 6 treatments, 6 weeks apart
Stretch marks: 4-8 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart
A course of Dermapen treatments are recommended to deliver and sustain long lasting skin correction and results. A professional skin consultation will determine the best course of action and number of treatments required. As a guide, 3-4 treatment*s are recommended for ageing and wrinkles, 6-8 treatments* for scar reduction and up to 8 treatments* for stretch marks. Needling sessions are performed at 6-8* weekly intervals to deliver cumulative and effective results. As needling triggers the skin’s natural healing mechanisms, visible improvement will appear around 2-4 weeks* post-procedure. The repair cascade may continue for up to 24 months* after just 1 treatment*. Multiple sessions provide progressive stimulation to further enhance results and longevity.
Pen technology allows for effortless facial needling with minimal side effects and down time. Fractional skin treatment ensures the skin’s integrity is never compromised, with any scabbing, bruising or burn risk. The appearance of petechiae or small blood blisters is common around areas of thinner skin quality especially around the crow’s feet and under-eyes. These are perfectly normal and usually disappear within 3-4 days. The skin will feel and look slightly red for up to 3 days post- treatment with Dermapen. This may be accompanied by a feeling of tightness the appearance of slight flaking. The application of a light moisturiser and sunscreen will increase comfort and reduce inflammation. A non-occlusive mineral make-up may be used to conceal any redness.
For optimal results, a period of effective active treatment creams, such as Vitamin A, C or Resveratrol & Procyanidin is recommended to allow the skin’s strength to build-up (especially for thin or delicate skin areas).
For minimum needle depths Dermapen Treatments are painless. Treatments over 0.5mm deep, may require a topical anesthetic cream to be applied 15-40 minutes before the procedure. This will render the treatments virtually pain free.
Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Application of a breathable camouflage will seal the skin and cover any redness for an immediate return to work.
It is recommended to wait at least 7 days after filler injections, so that any post treatment bruising from the fillers can settle. It is also possible to have your Dermapen Treatment several days before having fillers injected.
